Tips for Farmer's Market Shoppers

I LOVE Market season!  There is something special about heading out to your local market on a gorgeous sunny day and hand picking ingredients that will inspire the inner chef in you! Beginning as a customer I eventually became the farmer you see standing behind a table of their freshest veggies. I figured I'd share some tips that can help you get the most out of your next trip to market.

Have you ever been stumped at market? Walking along and an unique item jumps out at you, but you have no idea what it is!? I know I have been, and prior to my farming days I would just nod and continue on, don't be like old me, speak up and ask the farmer! Ask about how it's grown, and what it is commonly used in/for. If it sounds interesting cook it up, and take it to your next potluck. Farmer Markets are a geat place to discover new varieties of produce that can expand your cooking horizons!

Since your already asking questions, ASK MORE! If you want to know specifics, ask! Is this organic? Where is it grown? Do you grow it yourself? How can I prepare this?  Farmers can give you all the facts when it comes to veggies-utilize their knowledge!

Annnnnd let's talk about prices. I get that organic produce can be pricey, for some of us it's a bigger dent in the budget than others. Everything you see at Market is months of hard work-preparing soil, planting, endless hours of weeding. Farming ain't cheap y'all, so learn to give credit where it's due. Brainstorm ways to allot a few extra dollars into your food budget, I promise you won't regret it when you serve up your favorite veggie dish with the freshest ingredients possible!

Lupine and Poppies will be on apart of the Bellevue Farmers Market (May-September)located at the Red Caboose Park off HWY 70. Stop in and say hi, ask about the veggies, talk recipes with me. I encourage you to shop at local markets because it does make a difference, to your health and to the livelihood of a farmer.
